How to Take Measurements

~ Please follow the image examples in the following slides to ensure measurements are accurate ~

The String Method

Tie a piece of string around the narrowest part of your waist to provide you with a point to use for measuring. For women, this is approximately 1” above your bellybutton. For men, tie the string approximately 1.5”–2” (4-5 cm) above your belly button. It is extremely important that the string is tied at the narrowest part of the waist below the rib cage and above the pelvic bone; this area provides the most in waist reduction.

What to Avoid

When taking measurements, ensure the tape measure is parallel to the waist string and not at an angle as you see in this image. When measuring, do not pull the tape too tightly. The tape should be snug just before it would indent and wrinkle the skin. The illustrations below show the important lines to be measured: bust, waist, hip and underarm. In making these measurements, draw the tape measure firmly around the body and send us the exact measurements. We will allow for lacing, etc.

Waist

Circumference of your waist at the narrowest point, around an inch (2.5 cm) above the bellybutton, or at the bottom of your ribcage. For desired waist reduction: the waist measurement of the corset when laced completely closed, usually 4”-6” (10-15cm) smaller than your natural waist measure.

Underbust/Ribcage

Circumference of your rib cage just below your bust, usually at the bottom of your bra cup.

Waist to Underbust

Measure from your side body waist string up to the point under your bust; do not measure into the breast tissue, but below it.

Waist to Bottom Corset (Center Front)

Measure from the waist tape down to where you want your corset to end. With this same measurement, sit down and use a ruler to measure to cover the tummy and end just above the pubic bone, be sure the corset will not interfere with leg bending and sitting posture. For women this can be as low as the bikini line. For men, this measure is usually 4” (10 cm) or less.

High Hip

Circumference of your hip at the top of the hip bone, (usually around 5″ or 13cm below the waist string when using the string method)

Widest Hip

Circumference of your hip at it’s widest point. For women, this is usually at the same height as the crotch. For men, this is usually 5” (13cm) below the waist string.

Waist to Bottom Corset (Side)

Measure from your side body (in line with your hip) at the waist string, down to where you want the corset to end. For a Victorian corset, this is normally around 3-4” (7.5cm - 10cm). For an Edwardian corset, this measurement is normally around 5-6” (13cm - 15cm).

Waist to Top Corset (Underarm)

Measure from your side waist tape up to where you want the corset to end under your arm. This is usually to the top of the bra.

Waist to Top Corset (Back)

Measure from the back waist tape at the spine, up to where you want the corset to end at the top.

Waist to Corset Bottom (Back)

Measure from the back waist tape at the spine, down to where you want the corset to end.
For overbust or demibust styles

Bust

The circumference of your bust at the widest point around. (This is known as the bust point.)
For overbust or demibust styles

Cross-Bust Measurement

For each breast, measure vertically across the breast from the inside of the breast over the bust point (refer to previous slide for reference) to the outside of the breast. This point is across your breast, from one end of where your underwire would end to the other. Check the measurements of each breast separately, as many people have one breast that is larger than the other.
For overbust or demibust styles

Over Bust

Circumference of your upper chest with the tape measure directly under your arm pits.
For overbust or demibust styles

Nipple to Top of Corset

Measure from your nipple up to where you want your corset to end at the bust
For overbust or demibust styles

Nipple to Underbust

Measure from your nipple to the bottom of your breast.
For overbust or demibust styles

Side Front Waist to Nipple

Measure at your side body, from the waist string up to your nipple.
For overbust or demibust styles

Waist to Top of Corset (Center Front)

Measure from the waist string to the centre of the chest or bust (on bra-wearers, this would be at the top of the meeting point of your underwires, between the breasts)

Side Body Waist to Top Corset

Measure from the side body waist tape up to where you want the corset to end beside or below your breast. (For Overbust corset styles – measure from your side body waist string up to the outside edge of the underwire on your bra.
