What started many years ago with a simple request to create a wrist brace, eventually evolved into a vast skillset in the field of creating support garments to soothe and support the human body. 

For decades now, we have been working with customers with a variety of different medical needs, to build structural support garments that provide relief from pain and improve their overall comfort and well-being.

Lace Embrace Atelier has worked closely with and been recommended by doctors and specialists throughout British Columbia and beyond. We are dedicated to providing our customers with functional and beautiful pieces that meet their medical needs, and integrate seamlessly into their everyday routines.

We have done extensive work with customers with conditions such as:

In additional to our bespoke medical braces, we also offer optional alterations and add-ons to our stock corsets for accessibility and fit, such as shoulder-straps, fan-lacing, front-lacing panels, hidden flaps to access medical devices or ostomy bags, padding, etc. As these modifications typically need a more precise fit, we recommend reaching out ahead of time to discuss what is needed, go over any doctors recommendations, and book a medical fitting.

Medical Fittings: Step-by-step

Step 1: Quick intake (email/call)

We ask about goals, sensitivities, mobility, and any recommendations from your healthcare professionals.

Step 2: Medical fitting appointment in-person or online

We evaluate posture, comfort points, and movement needs.

We discuss closures and accessibility options.

Step 3: Build + refine

  • Patterning + structured build
  • Follow-up fitting (if applicable)

Step 4: Wear plan + delivery

Comfort check, lacing lesson, care guidance

What to bring / prepare for your fitting

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a doctor’s referral?

A: No, you do not, but it can help to get a doctor or specialist's feedback for things that we may need to adjust on your brace to better support your needs. We may ask for more information on a case by case basis, such as x-rays. Some insurance companies may ask for a doctor's note/prescription before they will approve coverage.

Q: What’s the difference between a medical brace and a fashion corset?

A: A medical corset brace is designed to be as supportive to the wearer's needs as possible, and is built with high quality materials like orthopaedic steel boning and firm cotton coutil. A medical brace is often build from scratch to the individual wearer's measurements, or altered from a stock model with modifications for fit, structure, and accessibility.

A fashion corset is often designed as more of an occasional garment that flatters the wearer, and while it can offer moderate support to the wearer, that is not it's primary purpose. (If you are uncertain if a style is more suited to medical support or fashion, it's best to ask beforehand!)

Q: Is this covered by insurance/extended health?

Ask your provider if they provide coverage for medical braces. We can often provide a quote for a brace based on your needs beforehand to submit to your insurance for clearance. Upon purchase, we provide a medical invoice for reimbursement by your insurance.

Q: What if my body changes (flare-ups, swelling, weight shifts)

A: Our braces are designed to be adjustable for comfort with each wear. We design them with the individual wearing them in mind. We may opt for different styles of lacing depending on body fluctuations, and we can usually alter your brace later on if need be.

Q: How many fittings are needed?

1-3 sessions is typical. During the first fitting, we plan out the corset brace.

The second fitting is to try-on the garment and assess where or not further modifications need to be made.

The third fitting is typically a pick-up appointment, to confirm that we have the best fit, and go over how to put on and take care of your corset brace.

Additional fittings may be added as needed. Your comfort is our priority.

Q: Can you work with clients outside Vancouver?

We typically recommend coming in for an in-person fitting if you are able to travel to simplify the fitting process, but we can also help customers through virtual consultations, and ship out partially completed braces or mock-ups to ascertain what alterations may be needed before completion.
